Some Places Leave a Lasting Impression
Some places leave a lasting impression, and Grandmother Rock is one of them.
A few years ago, my husband and I unexpectedly discovered this incredible sea stack on Trinidad State Beach in Humboldt County. Standing there, looking toward Pewetole Island as the waves rolled in, I felt inspired to capture the scene in watercolor on canvas.
Earlier this month, I returned to Grandmother Rock with my son. It was his first time experiencing this remarkable place, and seeing it through his eyes made it just as magical as my own first visit.
Grandmother Rock is more than a stunning landmark. According to Tsu-rai tradition, she is a patient grandmother who was turned to stone by the gods and now sits overlooking the Pacific, forever waiting for her warrior grandson to return from the sea. Knowing this story gives the landscape an even deeper sense of beauty, history, and reverence.
It's moments like these, sharing extraordinary places with the people I love, that continue to inspire my artwork and remind me why I paint.
